The Mantis with the 4 cycle Honda engine was easy to assemble and it is light. The engine has started easily each time it has been used and it does not take long to till the ground. The Mantis tilled my hard ground and smaller underground roots without a problem although the first time I used it, it bounced or skipped a few times which may have been due to my inexperience with it but the bounce was resolved by pulling back on it and leaving off the gas a little bit. The tines may be easily removed to remove weeds that may get caught around them. I was used to a big tiller so I was skeptical of a smaller machine for my small garden. I am not affiliated with the manufacturer and I would recommend this Mantis. I also recommend the kickstand which makes it easy to stand the Mantis.

We just received this attachment yesterday and have put it to good use already. Working on a 1 acre lot, with lots of problem areas, these attachments worked great. We only have the Mantis tiller about 6 months and love it. The attachments were easy to put on. The thatcher amazed us with how much it pulled up, without damaging the good grass. The aerator, seems more like a slit seeder, did a nice job . This is the first time we did this on our lawn, so we will see how it looks in a couple of weeks after the new grass we planted comes in. We thought it cut a little deep, so we just worked it to keep it at a depth we preferred. Since our lawn will be an ongoing project, we thought the purchase would allow us to work on our schedule without having to rent expensive equipment, then rush to return it. We ordered on a Wednesdy night and received the package on Friday. Since Mantis offered free shipping, we ordered directly from them. We received the same price that Amazon had.

Mantis areator attachement not compatible wth all lawns - Grover - Florida
A word of caution to homeowners with St. Augustine, Centipede, Zoysia or Bermuda type turf. Because these lawns have horizontal runners (roots) that are close to the surface and the Mantis areator is of the slit cutting type areator, it is not recommended for these types lawns. I contacted Mantis customer service about their areator since I have St Augustine turf and they said that the slit type areator is not compatible with grasses that have horizontal runners. So if you have turf with horizontal runners such as those noted above you will need to get or rent a plug style areator. I still might buy the dethatcher but I will pass on this combination kit with the areator.br /br /

Sent it back right away - R. Beaton -
Amazon shipping sent the tiller in the original carton with no over wrap. I was suspect as I viewed the holes in the carton and the loose tape. After looking in, I was convinced that this tiller would not do the job that I originally planned for. I went out and rented a mid-tine tiller from Home Depot to do the job. I appreciate the Mantis name and reputation, but I planned a 20 by 20 foot garden and wanted to 'till' through grass to start the garden. After a quick look....this was not ever going to do the job. The rented tiller with the Honda gas engine and 60 lbs of weight was still a work out, but I am so glad to have used it instead of this narrow lightweight machine. br /This is a cultivator for an established garden and no more.

I had a Troy Bilt for twenty years and it was always a bear to start, 2 cycle machine. This is easier to start as a 4 cycle but it is not as powerful. It works well for light tilling, I have an old Troy Bilt Horse for the heavier work. I have used it the past summer and it has held up well thus far. IT is a light weight machine, it is inexpensive, and it can be used in gardens where the tilling is in reasonable soil. It will have difficulty in heavier clay soils as well as in rocky soils.br /br /I waited a season to write this review to see how the machine fared. For the type of garden maintenance I use if for it was a good buy. The problem with Troy Bilt is that since their bankruptcy a few years back their parts are often difficult to get and thus self repair is a problem. br /br /If you have heavy or rocky soils I would not suggest this machine. If you want a good light weight machine this is not bad.br /br /On the negative side it runs at high rpm and the speed control is non existent. I did have more control over the 2 cycle machine.

Don't buy Troy Bilt!!! - Robert Blair -
This is the worst piece of equipment that we have ever bought. We purchased it 3 1/2 years ago from Lowe's. Took it home and it wouldn't start. Took it back to Lowe's and they would not replace it. They said it had to be sent for repair. The Lowe's man could not start it either. Came back from repair 1 month later and said they put a new carburator on it. Took it home, and it would not start. Took it back, and another sales person started it. The directions for starting it was wrong in the the Troy Bilt manual that came with it. Managed to use it a couple of times that first year. Last summer, it quit running. Warranty was over. Spent 2.00 for another carbureator etc. Bye the end of that season, it quit running again. Spent .00 to have somebody else look at. It started up, but now it won't start this season. I am not going to use it anymore. I have spent enought money on it and it raises my Blood Pressure cause we have had so much trouble with it. This is the last Troy Bilt product that we will ever buy again.

I almost didn't buy this because of a couple of negative reviews, but I did.br /br /One reviewer said that roots caused a plastic gear to strip out. I used this tiller, and the tiller "discovered" some metal posts that were underground. No problem, no damage. I think the "secret" is to use this tiller, like any tiller, properly: you go gently into the soil: you don't ram it down.br /br /Another reviewer reported problems because it couldn't handle turf. Mine did fine (although I will admit that I have loamy soil, here near Lake Michigan; I don't know how well it would do in clay soil).br /br /Yet another reviewer reported that the circuit breaker kept tripping. Mine did a couple of times, too. But I believe that happens when the tiller is overworked, and begins to overheat. In other words, give it a break. And a good signal to give yourself a break, as well.br /br /Bottom line: this tiller greatly exceeded my expectations. I have grown weary of renting tillers, and no absolutely no intention to subjecting myself to the hassle of buying a gasoline tiller (and especially the polluting two-cycle mini-tillers).br /br /I'm glad I bought this, and wish it was available years ago!

I had the circuit breaker cut the power once. Other than that it has been solid. It won't do the same work as a big gas model so buy the right size for your project and soil conditions.br /br /One item for wish list, I wish it had as an accessory a dethatching attachment. It would be like the mantis dethatcher. I can't find one for remington. I'd rather have bought a mantis then so that I can have the dethatcher also. br /br /I have issued a complaint to [...] for not having a dethatcher attachment.

To begin with, my order arrived within a day of the estimated delivery date. Unfortunately, it was damaged by the shipper. It appeared Troybilt did everything possible to ensure it arrived in just minted condition, but the shipper seemed to have piled things on it and let it crash around in the back of the truck. It was dropped off when we were not there to sign for it, which surprised me. While we were not necessarily looking to return the tiller (388 pounds of shipping seemed a waste), we did need replacement parts or something. The on-line returns feature on the web sight would not accept our return request and both Troybilt and Briggs and Stratten balked at providing free replacement parts for the damaged parts of the tiller. Next, we realized after wasting about 45 minutes of our time to convince ourselves that Amazon really does not display a customer service phone number anywhere on the web sight (customers must submit an E-mail (apparently to include requesting a phone number to talk to a customer service rep.) and then await contact/reply). So we sent in a frustrated customer E-mail to Amazon. However, Amazon customer service was very helpful by phone once contact was made and provided multiple acceptable choices for a solution to the problem of the damages during shipment. I am a now completely satisfied customer. After some assembly (handle bars and control cable connections), the tiller was up and running. I did notice the control lever to engage the tiller blades keeps slipping though, thus causing the blades to disengage. Since this is one of the parts I had to assemble, I assume this is something I caused. I have not yet contacted Troybilt to find out how to correct this yet. I expect Troybilt will be able to get me past this small problem. Otherwise the product handled as advertised. It is very well constructed. It is built like a tank and looks like it could take a beating for decades and keep working as long as I keep it oiled. I selected this model "The Horse" because my wife and I plan to expand our garden from a 20-foot X 20-foot patch to something more substantial on unbroken ground. I am now convinced this one will easily do the job. For now though, it is a little cumbersome getting around the tight turns in my current little garden. The tilling action is outstanding. The tiller leaves about a foot deep path of light fluffy soil. After tilling in this past year's tomatoes, basil and bell peppers, we tilled in five wheel barrels full of compost from our compost pile. This tiller mixed it all in so well you could barely see where we dumped it. I am looking forward to adding the snow blade and the woodchopper accessories to get the most out of this purchase. Yes, I would recommend this Troybilt tiller and Amazon to anyone. I have purchased numerous high-end and less expensive items from Amazon and have yet to be disappointed. I have two recommendations to Amazon though. First, check on the damage rate for this shipper if this is a pattern. Second, get a 1-800 phone number for customer service on the web sight or at least provide a note somewhere on the web sight explaining that problem resolution should first be attempted by E-mail and that one will be given to the customer in the first E-mailed response from Amazon. If this doesn't correct a problem that the customer has experienced then help is only a phone call away.

Two Brand New troybilt horse tillers broken the first days used - Lee - USA
I had two troybuilt horse Model 682 tillers purchased brand new. Both new rototillers broke right away. The first one rototilled two 160 feet rows and then the tines quite turning. We took it in for repair at qualified troybilt repair shop. Meanwhile I need a rototiller now! Two and a half weeks later I get it back from the shop. I used it one hour and the transmission would not shift into neutral or reverse. I returned this tiller thinking it was a lemon. The new tiller arrived and three and a half hours later it will not stay in gear. It doesn't matter weather it is high or low gear. I have to manually hold the main shift lever down which makes turning and walking to the side of the troybilt horse impossible. This is a wonderful feature about the horse when it is proper working order. We plan to return the rototiller and buy a different brand. Our old troybilt was a great machine. This new one is a P.O.S.

The Troy Bilt Horse tiller arrived in an inoperable condition. When you tried to engage the transmission it would just burn up the drive belts. Trans would not Turn. Black gasket silicon material from a previous repair, tines off machine, gas residue in tank. Outdoor store shipped a tiller with a bad trans, I dropped it off to a local dealer service center about a month ago, still in shop. I ordered a new tiller got a tiller with a bad trans right out of the crate. Piece of junk, 30.00 for a piece of junk. Don't buy from outdoor store through Amazon, they would not allow return.

I bought this machine last year with the money from my government stimulus check. Technically, it is called a cultivator, not a tiller, so I didn't know what to expect out of it power-wise. I was intent on putting in a decent-sized garden, but the only place in my yard that was getting good sun was also the spot where my lawn grew the thickest. I mowed the lawn and then went to work on it with the cultivator. With the narrow width, it naturally took me a good bit of time to till up approximately 16' x 32' plot of thick lawn, but I took my time and this machine did it in a day. I gave it a second tilling at a cross angle. I did have some grass come back in the garden, but this year I don't expect any of it to still be there.br /br /With the success I had on the garden spot, I went ahead and dug up huge stretches of my yard and built planters. These spots equaled the size of the garden spot. Then, in about three stages, I gradually tilled up my entire back yard (where grass would no longer grow due to shade) and planted it all in clover. This year I added more garden space by tilling up another chunk of lawn approximately 8' x 32'. I have tilled it twice, but will hit it one more time to make sure I've gotten all the grass killed this year. I've also-re-tilled last years garden area which I had over-wintered in clover.br /br /One thing that had concerned me was the instructions to remove the tines after each use and clean them. This turned out to be an extremely easy task, as they are held in place with ring pins and slide right off the axle. The tines are extremely tough on this machine. I've jammed large rocks in them and also bounced it off the edge of my concrete driveway. It just keeps chugging away with a minimum of care. Troy-Bilt makes a more expensive gas model, but I looked at them in the store and the tines appear to be exactly the same. This model is quiet and you never have to mess with oil and gas. Get a heavy-duty extension cord (or two)--the heavier the gauge the better to get full power to the machine.

The Little Tiller That Can - Aunt Pat - Central Arizona
When he took it out of the box, my husband thought I'd bought a toy. It only took a few minutes in the garden to change his mind. I'm a retired lady with arthritis and a bad back who wanted to be able to till up her garden without assistance. Since I do not get along with small gas engines which have to be started by pulling on ropes, I purchased this machine after reading the reviews. Because it's electric, starting it is no problem. It is light weight and easy to control. After spending the better part of a day tilling, I was only slightly stiff and sore the next day. Because of its size, it does take longer to do the job than would a full-sized tiller. The trick is to move it slowly, allowing it to thoroughly till each spot until the soil is loose and lump free. Compared to the hand raking that one must do to level out the soil prior to planting, I found the tilling to be the easier physically of the two jobs.br /br /The ground I tilled was a dedicated garden area which had not been used in 10 years. I'm not sure how well it would do on the hard soil we have here in Arizona if digging it for the first time, but I don't need to do that. I can also see where it will save my back from lots of bending to weed the garden when I use it to till between the rows.br /br /Hubby really likes it, too, because I can use it without relying on him - he's in much worse shape physically than I am!

I needed something for those times when weeds were trying to take over the garden and parts of the yard where there are shrubs. We do have clay soil and as such, it has been amended to help keep it loose. br /Thought about buying a gas cultivator, but where I planed on using this tool, while not small, it is also not that large. Not wanting to bother with another gas engine, and after seeing the reviews on this Troy electric cultivator, thought it was worth a try. br /br /Have used it several times now finding a choice was made in buying it. This tool has a "Can Do' type of attitude. Not sure it would if the clay had not been amended so can not answer that. But for working the soil over, doing a very good job to prepare it for planting and for weeding, this is a good tool to own. It will not replace the gas tiller for those big jobs, but it sure does a good job on those smaller ones! It does cut smaller roots with out any hesitation too.

Like many of you I bought this for my garden, but unlike a few of you I understand the correct way to use it. 1 - Don't till to deep when you first start out; 2 - Don't till wet soil as you're only asking for trouble; and 3 - Read and follow all the instructions! Another reviewer calls this tiller counter productive. They are absolutely correct. The counter rotating tines prevent the tiller from going forward and cause it to veer off course. Compared to the quality of old Troy-bilts this is a shoddy machine. The tines break like they were made of glass. The customer service is terrible. I ordered two right hand tines and was sent two left hand tines. I had to pay shipping to get the wrong parts, pay more to return them, and pay another to get the correct ones. I was told by the customer service rep that that was MTD's policy. The only quality on this machine is the Honda engine. You will be more productive with a hoe.

The size and power is judt right for my 30 by 100 ft. garden. The Honda motor starts up on one pull and the convience components are very helpful. The quick and easy pin position clip allows for eacy changes between free wheel movement and ingear movement. This allows for moving the tiller much easier when it is not running. Also, very helpful is the bars on the front that allow you to pull the tiller into a shed when you have to move/pull over a step or maneuver into a tight corner.

We purchased one of these from Amazon last year and I have now used it for two planting seasons.br /br /In its favor, I would say that it has been strong, powerful and reliable; the engine starts easily and works well at low RPM, which is often necessary because (unlike earlier Troy-Bilts) the tiller has but one transmission speed. It does a fine job of tilling dirt and light sod if tilled gradually in deeper successive passes.br /br /Against it are the awful control ergonomics, which I assume were designed by attorneys or some other species of non-user. Using the tiller controls is still unintuitive and downright dangerous for the inexperienced owner, especially if working in smaller gardens -- for which this tiller is unsuited, if for no other reason than the poorly designed reversing mechanism that makes getting out of tight corners quite difficult.br /br /For a big garden with large, open expanses this tiller is fine for an experienced user with good upper-body strength. For the smaller garden, it is difficult to use and can sometimes be dangerous. The crash bar in front isn't there for looks.br /br /

I bought the electric version of the Mantis mainly because I didn't want to deal with gasoline and oil. I live in the country and I find it much more convenient to handle electrical tools (despite the cords)br /br /I have found the tiller to be very handy. It's lightweight, almost silent, and does a fantastic job of tilling provided the conditions are right. It does have trouble if the dirt is too moist. I have even broken new sod using the Mantis, you do have to go over the ground quite a few times -- and grass and roots get caught in the tines so you'll need to clean them out.br /br /Overall I'm very satisfied with the tiller. You do have to make sure you have long enough extension cords though and occasionally it can be inconvenient to make sure you don't till over the cord!br /br /(The reviewer was compensated for posting this review. I didn't expect this to work as well as it did. I was cultivating packed clay to install a new no-mow lawn in a 20X40' area.br /I only thought I would be able to scape the surface. Wrong. Not only does it dig deep almost effortlessly, it is quiet!!br /Although I had to have someone else assemble it, I am very happy with this new tiller.br /br /

Extremely Poor Customer Service and Support from Mantis - Buyer Beware! - AAA -
I puchased this product from Amazon which was suppose to include the kickstand and border edger.br /br /The package was poorly taped.br /br /Installation was not the smoothest. Mantis needs to include longer bolts since the ones included it barely threads to the nut.br /br /Everything arrived except the metal blade for the edger... I got the wheel part only. br /br /So I figured that I should call the manufacture first since most manufactures would send out missing parts without question. Boy, was I WRONG! The customer service rep "Michelle's" response was "did you purchase it from us? if not return it to the vendor you purchased it from." She was extremely rude and unprofessional and refuse to send out a .00 part stating that it was not their fault and is "too much trouble". She also stated that if I'd had purchased a lands end shirt from Sears and is missing a button, would I call lands end for the missing button or return it to Sears. WHAT THE HELL.... its like comparing apples to lemons! The bottom line is Mantis would not support anyone who did not purchase it directly from them.br /br /This is also extremely disturbing and worrysome to me if I ever need them to honor their product warranty!!!! br /br /So after that phone call I was very tempted to throw everything in the box and have Amazon pick it up for a refund. Amazon's rep was very professional as usual and offered to overnight another whole unit (since they do not carry parts) and just have me take out the missing parts. They will also arrange for a pickup of the returning unit when I am ready. ***Excellent service from Amazon as usual***br /br /So now I am just hoping the replacement box will have the edger blade.br /br /I have not turned on the unit yet but I would rate the craftmanship as 7 out of 10 for the price of 5.00.br /br /Will update when I receive the replacement unit and if I decide to keep it and actually use it.br /br /So far I would rate the product and the manufacture ***Not Amazon*** 1 Star for the initial overall experence.

Pros:br /Lightweight, you can just pick it up and pack it around instead of dragging itbr /POWERFUL! I wasn't expecting it at all and had a very relaxed grip when I first turned it on, it almost zoomed out of my hands.br /Easy Assembly, 2 screws and two bolts with wingnuts, then you just "press in" the cord a couple places where required.br /about double the tine span the mantis tillers have, at less than half the price.br /br /Cons:br /Maybe a little too light weight, it didn't till very deep while walking a steady slow pace.br /br /As for the fact that it doesn't till very deep, I believe just re-tilling the area would do the job, which I would have done today but was in a hurry to get my strawberry plants in the ground before they died. I tilled a 10x10 patch of packed down soil, in under 10 minutes with no signs of overheating, so really, it's not a bad machine for people with small to medium gardens (like me!) but I wouldn't recommend it for a large garden.br /I was actually going to buy a Mantis tiller too, had the order form filled out and the check ready to go in the mail when I found this Sun Joe tiller, and was nervous to try it, because of the fact that there were no user reviews on any of the sites I researched them on, but decided to take the chance and save a lot of money. No regrets. Keep in mind too, this tiller only costs about as much as it would to rent one for 3 days, not a bad investment.br /br /EDIT: Day Two of tiller use and I like it even more, I started tilling my future vegie patch this morning and worked out the machine's quirks, first off, hold it back, and follow it very slowly, second, definitely retill the soil after the first tilling, it really digs in and tills well the second time, The only thing that stopped me today was when a bunch of synthetic twine that was buried in our back yard completely wrapped up the tines and had to be cut out, the machine stopped itself. After removing the twine I started it up and there had been no damage.

These reducers really work. Apparently the tangling of weeds and small roots in the area covered by these things is what causes enough strain on the electric motor to cause it to stall and the reset button to pop out. That won't happen if you install these things - at least mine has not stalled out since I put them on. I would not recommend using an electric Mantis tiller without these things. And don't use your electric tiller for long periods of time (15+ minutes) - set it up in the shade or in the wind on the kickstand and handles to let the motor cool down. Overheating is never good for an electric motor.

I have owned several Mantis machines. I run them until they collapse after many years of service. This time I bought the 4 cycle. What a great machine. A relative also used it, and gave it the title of "freaking awesome". These do not replace huge tillers, but for the average garden, they are exceptional. The 4 cycle is much easier to use, as the gas mix is always a pain...If you are a gardener...buy one of these.

I recently purchased the Mantis Tiller Border Edger and to those who said this is not worth the money I disagree. It does what it says it does, make a border and works as an edger. However if you want to make a straight edge that is deeper and cuts through the weeds replace the cutter wheel with the regular blade and leave the wheel on and follow the edge you cut first you will get a nice straight line with the weeds dug up. So all I can say is that it worked for me.br /

Border Edger is not a Lawn Edger - the freds - Dallas, TX
This border edger is not intended to be a lawn edger. Please make sure you are buying the correct tool for the job. This attachment does a wonderful job of cutting a border between your lawn and landscaping. I also use it to make that "first cut" on the lawn edging to dig out the dirt that accumulates over the winter so I can use my trimmer to edge the yard. The blade does not spin fast enough to actually cut grass/weeds in your lawn edging along sidewalks etc...

You may not need this item, but if you do, you won't be sorry for buying it! Since I bought my current house, my lawn has been in sad shape. Patchy grass, mostly weeds, dead thatch-filled spaces that rapidly fill in with dandelions. Trying to dig out weeds has been nearly impossible, because the ground is solid clay with a tons of rocks. The white grubs only make matters worse. 3 years of overseeding, weeding, fertilizing has gotten me nowhere.br /br /This year I bought the aerater attachment for the Mantis (bundled with the dethatcher). This thing kicks butt! No problem slicing through the dead matted thatch, cutting deep grooves in the clay. It tosses up rocks that can easily be picked up. It slices up weed roots (and dices a few grubs too) as a bonus. The weeds pull very easily afterwards, and the overseeding I've done all seems to be sprouting as the seeds fell into the grooves.br /br /The grass looks very ugly after you run this baby, but a couple of weeks later it's looking like a new lawn. It helps to run it after rain, or water a little first. The only downside I can see is that it's pretty small, so I probably can't do the whole 2 acres every year!br /br /

Warning! Do NOT use on the following grasses - Larry Diamond - Austin, TX USA
I just called the Mantis customer service number because I had a technical question. When I was on the line I mentioned I was looking forward to receiving the aerator and the tiller was great, it cut through my Bermuda no problem.br /br /The lady was very nice and said wait you have Bermuda? I said yes. She said do NOT use the aerator on Bermuda. And also do not use on St. Augustine, Zoyzia, and Centipede grasses. The way it works it will cut the roots and kill the lawn. WOW....This information was not up on their website nor on Amazon's.br /br /To be fair to Amazon I am sure if the info was something Mantis put on their website it would have gotten here. Anyhow this is a well deserved 1 star because I could have killed my lawn. Very irresponsible for Mantis to not put the information on their website (their CS rep said she would ask them to put it on the website). Also one of the big reasons we got the tiller was because it also had an aerator attachment. Had Mantis been up-front on the aerator we might not have gotten the tiller.br /br /That being said I have not had a chance to use the tiller fully because I just received it, but from my trial, it was very impressive. Cut through Bermuda like butter on the lowest power setting. But the aerator....very dangerous not to let people know. And now I have the hassle of returning it although Amazon is great in that regard. Still better if I had never ordered it in the first place.br /br /Also I did some research. Slit aeration which this is, is not nearly as good as core aeration. I was trying to avoid renting from a home improvement store...but it looks like that is what I will be doing now. Thankfully though I will have a lawn to aerate. Almost lost it because Mantis did not provide needed information.

This attachment worked as expected. Saved me a lot of cash compared to having it done by a landscape group. I was able to swap the attachment onto the Mantis Tiller in about 3 minutes and it worked just fine.

Okay, in one of my weaker moments, I bought this thing. It works fine - cleans out the tangled weeds around the hub. But I can't believe I paid for it. It's not like it's a magic wand or anything.br /br /I have an idea of how it would work even better. If the inside of the curved hook were knife-edged, it would slice through the weeds better, making them easier to remove. I would do this on my hook, but since I paid for it, I feel that I would be modifying a piece of fine art or something... just can't bring myself to do it.br /br /If I were to do this all over again (without money burning a hole in my pocket), I'd buy a piece of 5/16 or 3/8 round steel, heat it, bend it to match this shape, and put a point on the end. Then I would sharpen the inside of the curved hook. It would probably cost less than , and would do the exact same thing - except probably even better (with the sharpened curved hook). I would then take the leftover and get myself some Thai food.br /br /I'm giving 4 stars simply because it costs more than it should.

I bought the Mantis with Honda GX25 engine. I bought the dethatcher and aerator tine also. My original intension is to use it as a dethatcher only. It worked very well. It pulled out so much dead grass in incredible. The good thing is it did not beat up the lawn. THe lawn looked good right after dethatching, not like the big dethatcher that put bare spots on the lawn and you have to wait weeks for the lawn to recover.br /br /What surprised me was how well it work to cultivate weeds. It take some getting use to, at the begining, I have problem of it jumping. But I soon learn all you have to do is pull it back slightly and it will stop jumping. It takes some getting use to but it work. I even remove one tine and put the edger wheel on one side and I can get a very narrow line of tilling into nerrow space. I use it to dig holes for planting also. br /br /Bottom line, I am using it all year round.br /br /I know there are always people complaining about engine hard to start. My suggestion is read the manuel on how to start or ask someone that know small engines. Both the Honda GX25 and the 2 cycle engine on the cheaper Mantis are ALL tried and true COMMERCIAL engine. They both have iron clad reputations. If you have problem starting, chances are you are doing something wrong. Make sure you use fresh gas with StaBil fuel stabilizer. Stale gas is the main problem of gas engine. You have to do maintenance like washing the air filter or changing it in the 2 cycle case. Follow the instruction. If you don't maintain the gas engine, all will die in the first year. This is not for taking it out every few months, use it for 10 minutes and hang it up for another few months. It will die!!!br /br /If you think it is too much trouble, get the electric version.

For years I've used a Troy-Bilt tiller to till our garden. But I am the only one in the family who can use it. And since there are tilling needs throughout the year, and I am often on travel, we tried, and were disappointed by, those cheap tiny tillers at home improvement stores. But we are very happy with our Mantis tiller (we got the Mantis 7262-15-02 4-Cycle Honda Gas Powered Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand), and here's why:br /br /This tiller is smaller than normal tillers, but larger than those tiny home improvement store tillers. The big tillers are too big for everyone to use and the really tiny tillers only seem useful in flower beds with potting soil. But everyone in the family can use and control the Mantis tiller. Also, it is strong enough to use in the garden. Not too big, not too small -- just right!br /br /We really love the convenience of not having to mix the gas and oil. The detatch attachment works very well and it makes quick work out of a lawn. It appears to be a high quality implement and it did a great job dethatching my lawn. I was surprised how quickly it went. I don't think the aerator is going to be worth while, but it was basically free, so who cares!

This is a great tiller for my use which is tilling between garden rows and around trees to eliminate weeds. I have tilled quite a bit of ground getting ready for tree planting.br /br /The 1st thing I noticed is that you can't till at full depth on the first pass with this tiller. The tires don't have enough grip. 2-3" is tops. On the second pass you can get down to full depth. The engine has plenty of power and will work as well at idle speed as full speed - just a little slower. The tilling speed could be faster and combined with the 14" width, tilling a 20x20' piece of ground takes about 15 min.br /br /It seems to be well built and I expect it to last for many years. One thing that could be stronger is the handle. It is very easy to manouver for a tiller, but the handle tends to flex when turning and has even bent a little in one direction or the other. br /br /If you have a big garden and need to do a lot of tilling, I would recommend getting a bigger tiller with larger tines. I think Yard Machines makes one for about the same price that is bigger.br /br /If you have a small garden or just need to till between rows, this is perfect and the engine, tines and transmission look like they will last quite a while.

Okay for a tiny garden - MeJam - TN
My husband and I searched everywhere for a small rear tine tiller that I could handle better than the "huge" one we had. After researching and listening to salesmen, we chose this one. (He was very skeptical because he thinks bigger is better.) Anyway, after the garden dried out from the rains, he tried out the new Bronco. He complained to me that he had to push it through the garden. I just thought he was saying that because he wanted a larger one. (Keep in mind, our garden has been worked about 10 years and is now a mixture of lots of clay, and little topsoil, so it is still "thick" and hard.) I finally got to try the tiller out, and on the first pass, through the edge of the garden that had not been tilled as much, it went great. Once I got into the garden that had been worked over the previous years, I had to push the tiller. I also had to lift it up to keep it from getting stuck in the dirt. It would till down, but the tires are not big enough to pull it. Guess where it is now? Back at Lowe's. They were great holding to their guarantee that if it wasn't what we expected, we could return in within a certain time period. Now, we are on for a tiller with larger tires. br /Faults for a female user: hard to transport unless you park it right next to where you use it, also have to move the tires to make them either pull when cranked only or move them again so you can push the tiller when it is not cranked, have to push it through a well "seasoned" garden and it is hard to do that, also have to hold up the handle to keep the tines from getting stuckbr /Pluses: cranks easy, fairly light-weight (but cannot use it one handed like on the commercials)

I took delivery on one of these beauties about three weeks ago and it is one fine rototiller! The 10hp Honda engine is powerful and reliable. The gear-driven business end of the rototiller is sharp and smooth and twirls around about twice as fast as my old Troybilt, making for very fine work. The tractor has three forward gears -- one of which is apparently designed to pull along a sulky at a speed faster than you can walk -- and will cover about twice, perhaps thrice, as much ground in the same time my old tiller took.br / However a buyer should know that assembly is required and the assembly instructions are almost completely inadequate. It will arrive on two pallets--the tractor and the tiller seperately--and you'll have a puzzle that will keep you trying to figure things out for a day or two. So plan on being mechanically inclined. br / The buyer should also know that this particular model is probably too big and difficult for my wife to operate. She's the primary gardener and the brains behind our garden. But I'll be the one who'll probably do the tilling. It weighs about 275 pounds and can't just be wrestled around on the turns although the differential transmission helps quite a bit here. A more serious problem is that your left hand has to be above-average in size to cover and operate both the safety switch and the clutch on the left handle.br / But it's a wonderful piece of equipment that is at least as good and probably better than I expected for its premium price. 340CC Honda Engine; 26" Tiller; All Gear transmission

I wore all the tines off my tiller tines over the course of the last 2 years. They did not break, but when they are less than 2 inches long from the hub and straight, they don't dig very well. After installing new tines, my tiller was back to new again. I used it to plant 6 apple trees, 2 pear trees, 5 peach trees, 2 plum trees, 18 blueberry bushes, and 7 lilac plants with no problems. In a couple of weeks, I will plant about 30 rows, 100ft long in the garden all with the new tines. They make preparing the ground easy work. If your tines are worn, I highly recommend new ones.br /br / - Jerry

I bought the Mantis to weed between rows in my garden, approx. 30'x15' and for small jobs when I don't want to get out the TroyBilt. Well, the Mantis is a blast! It really tears into the weeds and dirt, and is easy to carry, use and control. It works really well with the tines reversed for weeding, and works great going forward and being pulled back for a very through weeding job. br /br /I agree that it probably isn't the best in hard soil or around lots of rocks, but it's perfect for my needs. br /br /I also used it to till over some lettace when I was ready to plant tomatoes with the tines in the forward position, and it did an excellent job. Mantis 2 cycle gas tiller/cultivator - G. F. - Northern California
Purchased this lightweight tiller to do some small backyard gardening. Received it in a timely manner and it was easy to put together. Am extremely happy with the purchase and the ability of this little tiller. It worked extremely well in an area with few weeds and tough soil. I haven't tried it around areas with lots of weeds, but figure it would do just as well. I bought the Mantis 1722-00-02 Tiller Weed Reducers with it and can see the benefit in adding these to the machine. Over the past few years, fuel additives have caused moisture problems for carbuerated engines. I now add Sta-Bil Marine Formula Ethanol Treatment to my fuel on my carbuerated engines and would recommend it. It will save you some frustration and a trip to the repair shop.

I already have a 6 hp rototiller. I bought this as a cultivator to do the weeding amongst my vegetable plants. The good news is that it is very light; the bad news is it is very light. It works ok, but where the soil is hard it bounces like crazy.

I received the tiller in timely fashion, assembled it easily and was amazed when the Honda engine fired on the first pull. When the transmission is disengaged it is easy to roll back and forth to the garden. br /I had previously had my new garden plot broken up, but a few passes back and forth had it looking like a powder puff...smooth, no clods, and really ready for planting.br /All in all, I am pleased with my choice of tiller, even though it was a bit more expensive than some others I could have bought.

Think before buying - Ken - NH
MTD purchased Troy-Bilt a few years back and has decided they have no interest in supporting the dealer network or customers who bought PRE-MTD Troy-Bilt equipment. Specifically the Troy-Bilt 42012 Snow Thrower. They make no recommended engine replacement, offer no spec for the engine refuse to even attempt to work with Tecumseh on a recommended replacement. In short, all dealers are unsupported as are the customers. What they are interested in is taking the Troy-Bilt name and that is it. A reputable company (the REAL Troy-Bilt) would have worked with the dealer (their dealer who originally sold the machine) to find a replacement then document it to their entire dealer network so it would become a non-issue. Troy-bilt chose not to do this. I would think twice if I am a consumer or dealer on how MTD, brands also Club Cadet, Yardman, Bolens, McColloch, and MTD treat their dealers and past customers. If you looking to purchase something the manufacture will stand behind, don't purchase this. To MTD it is disposable and so are their customers. Hope this helps.
